Reed diffusers are a method of distributing scented oil throughout an environment for the purposes of aromatherapy. Usually a dozen or more bamboo or willow /rattan reeds are placed in the mouth of the container of the oil, so that the tips tend to array in a circular pattern. The reeds transfer the scent up to the surrounding air by capillary action. This is much like a celery stick that wicks up water. To be effective the reeds must be turned, so the end with new oil is up. It is also advised that one always use a coaster or decorative lamp plate and wash their hands after handling oils. Typical Reed diffuser oil is a dipropylene glycol- fragrance grade which only means that it has no or little inherent odor of its own. Different essential oils are added in appropriate measures by the manufacturer to suite the various tastes of customers. It is the right consistency to wick up a reed. Reed diffusers are widely available at commercial aromatherapeutic or home stores.
